A founder said something recently that stuck: "I know we need to change. I just do not know where to start." We hear this a lot. The gut feeling is there: a new capability to build, a way of working to change.
But the day-to-day never stops long enough to figure out what the first move actually looks like.
Acknowledging that change is needed is already progress. The next step is harder: being honest about whether you have the people, the time, and the experience to drive it. For most SMEs the answer is no, not because anything is wrong, but because lean businesses do not carry spare capacity or expertise in things they have never done before.
That gap forces a real choice. Do you invest time in building the capability internally? Or do you bring in outside support to get things moving while your team learns alongside? There is no universal answer. It depends entirely on how much time you can afford.
AI is the obvious pressure point right now. Most founders feel the urgency but do not know where to begin. The best starting point is usually finding someone willing to understand your business first and work with you from there.
